Date
September 28-30, 2018 (Friday, Saturday & Sunday)
Speaker
Ted Peng
Title
Sonship
Overview

It is God’s wonderful intention from the very beginning that we who believe Him ought to be His sons according to sonship, in the likeness of His Son Jesus Christ. The word “sonship” appears in Romans, Galatians and Ephesians. It means establishing someone as a son. It denotes a lasting relationship of covenant, responsibility, representation, and love.

God is not content for us to be just His children. He expects us to grow up to be His establish sons. We will look at 3 examples in the Old Testament: Isaac, God’s people Israel, and David, to understand God’s heart and mind concerning sonship. We will see what Lord Jesus has accomplished to make sonship available to us. And we will examine the present-day work of the Holy Spirit on each of us to really make us sons according to sonship.

May we truly see God’s glorious intention, and appreciate the patient work of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit on each of us! May we treasure sonship and respond, that we may truly rise up to be sons according to sonship!

Day 1: 9/28/2018 (Friday) 8PM

In the Bible, the word sonship (Greek huio-thesia: set as son) appears in Apostle Paul’s letters to the Romans, to the Galatians, and to the Ephesians. In these letters sonship means God has set or established us who belong to Him in the position of His sons.

From the OT to the NT, whenever God mentions sons or sonship He speaks of a special relationship of love, of covenant, of responsibility, and of representation. It is a spiritual relationship, not by flesh. And He expects sons to live and work to the praise of His glory.

We shall see that sonship is God’s glorious will for His people from the beginning. It is brought to you and me by the finished work of Christ Jesus. It is realized in our lives by the guiding and perfecting work of the Holy Spirit. It requires chastening. And it leads us onward to become heirs of God’s inheritance.

  1. In Genesis – The LORD told Abraham: Ishmael I will bless. “But My covenant I will establish with Isaac. (17:20-21) And “in Isaac shall your seed be called. ” (22:12)
    1. Here we see that sonship is about covenant with God, not about blessings in the world. It is a spiritual relationship, not by the flesh.
    2. By a covenant God promised to protect Isaac in the land and provide him every need in life. And God expected Isaac to serve Him as the only God.
    3. The most significant of God’s actions on Isaac was He asked Abraham to offer Isaac to Himself as a burnt offering. By faith Abraham did. God accepted his offering and gave Isaac back to him, taking a ram as a substitute. And God said, “In your seed shall all the nations on earth be blessed.” (Gen 22:18)
      1. In saying this, God has taken Isaac as His own son, spiritual son. Only through God’s son can all nations on earth be blessed.
      2. So, Isaac pre-figures God’s real son Jesus Christ, who will come in the fullness of time to really bless all the nations on earth.
  2. In Exodus – God sent Moses to tell Pharaoh: Israel is my son, my firstborn. Let my son go that he may serve me. (Ex 4:22-23)
    1. Covenant: God will protect them and provide for their every need. Israel will honor the LORD as their only God and only provider.
    2. Responsibility: Israel was to serve the LORD as son and first born.
    3. Representation: Israel would be known among nations as the people of LORD Jehovah. The LORD said in Isaiah: “Israel I have created for my glory. (Isa 43:7) And, you are my witnesses. (43: 10,12)
    4. Although Israel failed repeatedly in history, the LORD never gave them up. He proved to be the Father who loved them with everlasting love, infinite patience, and unfailing hope.
  3. With David – God took David as His son in Ps 89:26, and declared covenant, responsibility, representation and loving-kindness in Ps 89:20, 27,28.
    1. He shall call unto Me: you are my Father, my God, and the rock of my salvation. v. 26
    2. My loving-kindness will I keep for him forevermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him. v. 28
    3. I will make him firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth. v. The highest king refers to Christ Jesus to come.
  4. Response - One thing special about David. The Bible records a whole-hearted, all-out response to sonship that lasted all his life. For example:
    1. David knew the LORD was with him in his days as shepherd, his fight with Goliath, and his years as fugitive fleeing from king Saul.
    2. When David became king at 30, he quickly did 3 things for the LORD. He took Jerusalem, moved back the ark, asked to build a house for God. These are things Israel did not do or consider for decades or centuries. He considered them his utmost responsibility. His thinking, feeling, and burden were totally occupied with God’s need. (Ps 132, Acts 13:22)
    3. In his later years, he clung to the LORD: “Your condescending gentleness has made me great.” (2Sam 22:36b)
    4. Gentiles came to Jehovah because they respected David’s God. For example, Uriah the Hittite (2Sam 11:6, 23:39), Ittai the Gittite (2Sam 15:19, 18:2).
    5. 1000 years later, in Acts 13, God said, I have found my servant David, who is after my heart. He will do all my will.
      1. He was occupied with the Father’s thought (Jerusalem), the Father’s feeling (the ark, Ps 132), and the Father’s burden (the house, 2Sam 7) ahead of his own.
      2. David was a real son who had fully satisfied the Father’s heart.
  5. David responded to God’s desire for sons according to sonship. Many of Israel did not. God lamented in Isaiah 1:3: Ox knows the owner; and donkey knows the master’s crib. But Israel does not know; My people do not consider.
    1. But those whose hearts responded, the remnant in the Book of Isaiah, though grieved, held onto God as their Father. (Isa 63:16-17)
  6. God our Father is waiting for you and me to respond and to seek after His heart like David and the remnant in Isaiah.

Day 2: 9/29/2018 (Saturday) 4PM

  1. When Lord Jesus came, His life and work in 33.5 years fully and completely demonstrated God’s intention on sonship.
    1. Love: The 10 commandments were God’s testament and requirements on His children Israel. Jesus’ said that meant love. “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” (Matt 22:37-38)
    2. Responsibility: He told His Father: I have completed the work that you gave me to do. John17:4. And on the cross He turned to us: It is finished. Indeed you and I today are set free by His finished work!
    3. Representation: John’s testimony: No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten Son in the bosom of the Father, He has declares Him. (John 1:18)
    4. Covenant: Jesus’ heart and mind were one with the Father all the time and all the way. In fact, God called Christ Jesus “a covenant of my people” in Isa 42:6. It means when God’s people look at Jesus, they will know God’s covenant with them: His promises and His expectations. And they will know that the covenant can be and will be fulfilled, on God’s side and on their side! Jesus is the covenant and the mediator!
  2. Christ Jesus made sonship available to you and me by the work He finished on the cross.
    1. At the beginning of John’s gospel, Christ Jesus gave whoever received Him and believed in His name the right to be God’s children. “Who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God。( John 1:11-12) 賜他們權柄被稱為神的兒女
    2. At the end of John’s gospel, after Lord Jesus was raised from the dead, He started to call His disciples brothers and fellow sons of God. “Go to My brethren and say to them, I am ascending to My father and your father, to My God and your God.”
      1. Jesus did this after 3.5 years and after His own resurrection.
        1. A history with Him
        2. A new power and new life - He is the resurrection; He is the life.
      2. He wanted His disciples to love and serve God the Father the same way He loved and served His God the Father.
        1. A new relationship with God, through Jesus
        2. A confidence it will work, because it is with Jesus
      3. Paul and Peter noticed. In their epistles they referred to God by a special name: “The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” (2Cor 1:3, Eph 1:3,17; 1Pet 1:3)
        1. Not only it is through Jesus, but also by His power and assurance
        2. Paul said in Roman 8, right after we are conformed to the image of God’s Son, that Christ might be the first born among brothers. It echoes what Lord Jesus said in John 20:17.
  3. A warning and lesson - Lord Jesus told the story of the father and two sons (Luke 15:11-32)
    1. The second son took his share and went into the world. He squandered away all his money, with nothing left.
      1. Yes, he found out he was foolish to have left home: now even no food. (v. 17)
      2. But he also woke up to the spiritual: I have sinned against heaven and before my father. (v.18)
      3. The father was ever waiting for him to come home. (v.20)
      4. His father couldn’t wait to put on him the best robe (representation), the ring (covenant), and the sandals (responsibility) that were kept for him. (v.22)
    2. The elder son did not think much of sonship.
      1. Behold, so many years I serve you, and never have I transgressed a commandment of yours. You have never given me a kid (little lamb) to make merry with my friends. (15:29)
      2. Child, you are ever with me. And all that is mine is yours. But it was right to make merry and rejoice, because this your brother was dead and has come to life again, and was lost and has been found. (15:31-32)
      3. He did not think much of the love and the covenant that his father always had for him, or the responsibility his father gave him, or the privilege of representing his father.
  4. We ought to always remember:
    1. God is our Father who loves us all the time in all circumstance.
    2. Our sonship stands on the firm foundation of Jesus who said, “It is finished.”
    3. Our sonship can surely succeed, for Christ Jesus is the covenant and mediator.
    4. Through Jesus we became God’s children and go on to be God’s sons. To the praise of God’s glory!

Day 3: 9/30/2018 (Sunday) 10AM

  1. In our lives, Sonship is made real by the guiding and perfecting work of the Holy Spirit –
    1. Led by the Spirit of God – As many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. (Rom 8:14)
      1. Lord Jesus introduced the Holy Spirit as another comforter, paracletos in Greek. (John 14:16) It means someone walking along side of us, parallel to us, who never leaves us. He dwells in us. He comforts, encourages, prohibits, corrects, and guides until God’s purpose for each of us is reached.
      2. He leads me into God’s truth. (Jo 16:13) that I may know the Father.
      3. He glorifies Jesus in me (Jo 16:14) that I may praise God’s glory.
      4. He intercedes for me and in me that I may know WHAT to pray, that I may pray according to God. (Rom 8:26).
    2. Conformed to the image of the Son of God (Rom 8:29)
      1. We who are called according to God’s purpose (8:28)
      2. God will conform us to the image of His Son
      3. That Christ may be the firstborn among many brethren
    3. Waiting for sonship, the redemption of the body (8:23)
      1. We who have the first fruit of the Spirit
  2. The necessity of chastening - My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord, for whom the Lord loves He chastens and scourges every son whom He receives. Heb 12:5-6
Example: David’s attitude toward chastening
    1. From the day he killed Goliath David endures afflictions, misunderstanding, and persecutions; and he ran from cave to cave as a fugitive (1Sam 18:8-)
      1. In endless trials and hopelessness David learned to look to the LORD. (see his Psalms: Ps 61:2, for example)
    2. David did not allow any separation between his heart and the LORD’s.
      1. The LORD has chastened me severely, but He has not given me over to death. (Ps 118: 18)
        1. Deep in his heart he accepted God’s disciplines and mercy.
      2. While other psalms in general speak of “our transgressions”, “our sins”, and “our iniquities”, David prayed: “my transgression”, “my sin”, and “my iniquity” in more than 10 psalms.
        1. He removed every veil in his heart to let God search the depth of his soul.
        2. “Search me, O God, and know my heart; prove me and know my thoughts, and see if there is any grievous way in me. Lead me to the way everlasting” (Ps 139:23-24)
      3. David submitted to severe chastening. Lord Jesus said, “From John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heavens is taken by violence; the violent seize on it.” (Matt 11:12) David did violence to himself that he could be close to God!
  3. Let us pray for each other, that by God’s grace we can all be sons according to son-ship! To the praise of His glory!
    1. Pray that we are conformed to the image of God’s Son, Lord Jesus.
      1. Obey with thanks the guidance of the Spirit.
      2. Accept with thanks the chastening of the Lord.
    2. Pray that we take up the son’s responsibility, as Lord Jesus did and David did:
      1. Think the Father’s thoughts; feel the Father’s sorrow and joy.
      2. Be burdened with the Father’s burden; Do the Father ‘s work.
    3. Pray that we live a real life worthy of representing our Lord and our heavenly Father.
  4. God has sent the Spirit of God’s Son into our hearts, to make us heirs through God. (Gal 4:6-7) We see the Spirit of God’s Son in the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David (Rev 5:5b). That Spirit led the tribe of Judah to inherit God’s inheritance.
    1. Judah bore the burden for his brothers. (Gen 37:26-27, 45:32-33)
      1. Jacob blessed Judah as a young lion, a lion, a lioness. (Gen 49:48-49)
    2. Caleb for 45 years never forgot Hebron. (Josh 14:10-12)
